Tasting Notes

Dark and complex, it opens with black cherry, black currant, black coffee, and wet rock, layered with thyme, anise, cured meats, and black tea. The palate is deep and creamy yet energetic, with mineral-tinged fruit, sweet herbs, and a long molten finish.

Food Paring

Pair this Washington Syrah with grilled lamb, smoked meats, or hearty braises when you want depth and finesse in the same glass. Its savory herbs and mineral edge also make it a natural with mushroom dishes and richly seasoned roasts.

Professional Reviews

97 Vinous

"The 2019 Syrah Royal City is earthy, almost meaty in the glass, as notes of sage and dill accentuate green olive, then evolves to show musky black currants and crushed rocks. This is texturally thrilling, deep and creamy in feel, yet somehow energetic as well, with masses of mineral-tinged black fruits complemented by sweet herbs and tobacco. The 2019 melts away from the palate like molten chocolate, with exotic spices and tangerine to balance. Wow, I can’t wait to see what another four to five years of cellaring might reveal here."

96 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2019 Syrah Royal City showed beautifully, with a more finesse-driven style than previous vintages. Its translucent ruby hue is followed by a red-fruited Syrah offering beautiful notes of toasted spices, cracked hazelnuts, cured meats, and peppery herbs. Medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant, and silky on the palate, it has fine tannins and a great finish."

96 James Suckling

"Lovely, leafy aromas of fresh garden herbs, drying tobacco leaf, bay leaf, grilled plum and baked strawberry. Medium-to full-bodied with fine, slightly tense tannins. An array of juicy red and black fruit and berries on the palate. Almost some white tea notes come through, such as lavender and chamomile. Focused and long. Best after 2025."
