Tasting Notes

The wine opens with blackberry, currant, licorice, bay leaf, cedar, and spice with a fully mature aromatic profile. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured yet velvety, offering silky tannins, attractive vanilla and berry flavors, and a long lingering finish.

Food Paring

Enjoy this mature Saint-Julien with roast rack of lamb, duck breast, or beef dishes when you want classic claret character with a softened edge. Its cedar, tobacco, and earthy complexity also make it a natural fit for wild mushrooms and truffle-accented plates.

Professional Reviews

93 James Suckling

"This is a mouthful, with loads of fruit and truffle character. Exotic and wild, but starting to close. Give this five years."

91 Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"In 2003, this was the second wine of Leoville Las Cases rather than a separate entity. A brilliant effort, it was harvested between 11 and 26 September and boasts 13.3% natural alcohol. The final blend was 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. Its deep garnet/ruby/plum colour is followed by notes of bay leaf, blackcurrants, liquorice and pencil shavings. The wine is deep, full-bodied, rich and fully mature, but its length, richness, freshness and overall completeness suggest it will continue to drink well for 7–8 years. It’s a beauty."

90 Wine Spectator

"Very pretty aromas of blackberry, currant and liquorice. Full-bodied, with velvety, round tannins and lots of attractive vanilla and berry flavours. Long. Best after 2009. 9,500 cases made."
