Tasting Notes

Intense aromas of cherries and other dark fruit are woven with cedar, tobacco, and a subtle note of oak. The palate is concentrated and smooth, with balanced acidity, refined tannins, and a long, elegant finish.

Food Paring

Pour this structured Chilean red alongside red meat, lamb, or hearty pasta for a polished dinner table pairing. Its depth and freshness also make it a smart match for slow-roasted dishes and savory sauces.

Professional Reviews

97 Descorchados

"Altaïr has been produced since the 2002 vintage and always from vineyards planted on the slopes of Alto Cachapoal, where the Andean foothills begin. It's a blend based on cabernet sauvignon (this year with 88%), plus cabernet franc and carmenere, all from a selection of the best blocks on the 70-hectare property, mostly on slopes with less fertile and rocky soils. The wine was aged in oak for 22 months—the first 16 in a combination of barrels and foudres, and the last six entirely in foudres. Despite the warm year (one of the hottest in at least 20 years), it remains firm in its notes of tense, ripe fruit notes thanks to acidity that stubbornly remains to the finish. Fine tannins are similarly manifested, accompanying the wine all the way, lending tension and a sense of solid structure. An excellent vintage in a year in which many ambitious reds, like this one, have succumbed to alcohol."
