Professional Reviews

93 James Suckling

"A lively, succulent and composed Chianti Classico showing aromas of forest berries, dried flowers, thyme and warm spices with some dry clay. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Bright and agile, with a vivid center palate and a tactile, driven finish. Drink or hold."

92 Wine Enthusiast

"On the nose, bitter orange pushes back on a cherry sweetness, which is heightened by a splash of vanilla, while savory undertones of graphite and wild herbs provide balance. These notes continue cavorting on the palate, while tannins and acid stand at attention."

91 Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"Always a solid choice on any trattoria wine list, the Mazzei 2022 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli offers fresh cherry and blueberry along with varietal tones of sweet earth and iris root. The wine is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts of Malvasia Nera and Colorino. It goes through a quick 12 months in oak. This mid-weight red shows good intensity and silky tannins. The wine is easily accessible with 220,000 bottles made."

90 Decanter

"The Mazzei family has made considerable strides at the Gran Selezione level, honing the identity of the estate’s three distinct UGA bottlings. This is not, however, to the detriment of the annata. A flagbearer for the denomination, it hails from seven different sites between 220 and 570 metres. The 2022 shines brightly with dark red cherry underscored by mint, tarragon and nutmeg. Zesty, concentrated acidity sparks the palate, while polished tannins give a subtle gratifying chew. Clean, sleek and well-proportioned with plenty of flavour appeal."
