Reviews - 98 James Suckling
Varietal - Red Blend
Region - Oakville, Napa Valley, California
Tasting Notes - Winery Notes "A wine that can be traced back to the earliest days making wine together, La Magdalena is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from the renowned Oakville Ranch, high in the eastern hills of Napa Valley’s most famous appellation. Organically farming with intention, harvesting at optimum ripeness, and carefully shepherding the wines through fermentation and maceration, yields a wine with remarkable depth, a silky texture, and eye-opening complexity. The dance of these two varieties together is what excites us most about making wine in the Napa Valley.
The 2019 vintage is defined by its energy. All of the wines from this special year have an electric quality, and La Magdalena is a prime example. The deep, brooding character that is almost always present in the wine is there, but with a brightness and aromatic lift that excites the senses. Notes of blackberry, nutmeg, and gravel are wound up with cinnamon, cardamom, and camphor. Despite its serious depth and power, there is nothing out of place here, even with the volume turned up. Tannins are silky and burnished, and the finished goes on for nearly a full minute.
Blend: 62% Cabernet Franc, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon"
